October is a busy month for our family. Three of our biggest days fall right in a row. October 23 - Dylan's Birthday, October 24 - My Birthday, and October 25 - The day we met our beautiful daughter, Aubree.
Dylan turned 5 yesterday. I can't believe that Brandon and I have been parents for 5 years already. It absolutely flew by. Each year, it has been more and more fun to celebrate Dylan's birthday. Last year, we had to make him think that his birthday was actually a few days earlier than it was. We were traveling to Ethiopia on his actual birthday, and we just couldn't bear the thought of him knowing that we weren't with him that day. So, we had his birthday party a few days before we left, and told him it was his birthday that day. He had no idea. :) This year, he's harder to fool. He does a calendar activity at school everyday, so he was able to count down. It was fun to ask him how many days were left.
When he woke up yesterday, he ran into our room and said...
Dylan: "Mom! Dad! Am I five yet?"
Mommy: "Yes, honey. You're five now. Happy birthday!"
Dylan: "WOW! I'm going to go weigh myself!!!"
I love the way kids think. At bed time last night, he was very concerned that none of his pajamas would fit anymore because he was 5. I assured him they would still fit, and told him to go downstairs to put some on. Wouldn't you know it...the pair he picked had a new hole right by the feet He started crying and said, "See! I told you they wouldn't fit anymore!" Hahaha! Pics of his birthday will be coming soon. His party is tomorrow night!
Today is my birthday, which really isn't a big deal...other than the fact that I had to say goodbye to my twenties. UGH! Today is the first day of my thirties. I woke up late and barely got my kids to school on time. I hope that's not a sign of things to come. I've had a lot of friends telling me that being in your thirties is great. Let's hope they're right. Last year, I was in Ethiopia on my birthday. I spent the day drinking fabulous coffee, eating Birtukan's AMAZING food, and touring Ethiopian historical sites with Abel. All while knowing that I was finally on the same continent as my daughter, and that I'd get to meet her the very next day. Pretty sure I can never beat my 29th birthday, but we gave it a good shot over the weekend. A bunch of our fabulous friends got together for dinner at Boatwerks on Saturday night, and then got to enjoy Groovewalk together. It was a fun night, and I have to say that my 30th birthday celebration was an absolute blast! I wish I had pictures with everyone who was there, but I didn't bring my camera, and my phone decided not to work that night.
In other news, I've decided that at 30 years old, I'm going to become a vegetarian. I won't go into all the details now, but I will say that it has nothing to do with animal rights, and everything to do with watching the documentary, "Forks Over Knives". Maybe someday I'll even become a vegan. We'll see.
Aubree's big day is tomorrow. I can't believe we've known her for a year already! I've been reminiscing a lot lately with this day approaching, and I'll be sharing some of that with you in a special post tomorrow. So much can change in a year!
