November 4, 2010 was a very important day. It was the day that Aubree legally became our daughter. We have "officially" been a family of 5 for one year today!
I'm not sure how much of our court trip details I shared last year because it was a difficult time. Our court trip was one of the most emotional times of my life. We went from the emotional high of FINALLY meeting our daughter, to the emotional low of finding out we would not be passing court while we were there. Due to personal issues with Aubree's birth family, her biological grandmother was not able to make her court appearance that day. The reasoning was 100% justifiable, but it was still hard news to swallow. The next day at court, we watch all the other families we were traveling with come out of the court room with huge smiles and tears of joy. They all passed. We were so happy for them! We were called in last, and I'm really glad that we knew ahead of time that we wouldn't be passing that day. We were pleasantly surprised to hear that the judge had already rescheduled our court date. November 4 would be court date #2.
When I woke up last November 4, I had a knot in the pit of my stomach. I hardly got any sleep the night before, and I remember just BEGGING God to let us pass. I probably emailed our case worker at least once before she even arrived at the office that morning. :) I wish I remember what time she called. For some reason, I didn't blog much about this last year. Anyway, she called and said, "SHE'S YOURS! YOU PASSED!" Oh the relief! The relief was almost as good as that last push when you're delivering your baby. That final push that ends the pain so you can breathe again. It would have been that good if someone would have then placed my daughter back in my arms.
Almost immediately when I got off the phone with our case worker, Dylan came running in from outside to announce that he saw a huge rainbow. I went outside to find one of the brightest rainbows I had ever seen. A while later, my friend Betsy texted me to ask if I saw it. She said, "That's Aubree's rainbow!" I think she was right.
A brief moment of PEACE before the biggest challenge of our lives...actually getting her home.
